Healthy food subscription boxes are hot right now, and I recently had a chance to review one that I found to be extremely cool — Daily Harvest.

Daily Harvest is a weekly or monthly plan that delivers frozen, plant-based and farm-fresh smoothies, soups, Harvest Bowls, oat bowls, chia bowls, and lattes to your door. Each item comes in its own cup with the (totally recognizable) ingredients and (super simple) instructions listed on the side. You simply keep them in your freezer until you’re ready to eat, then pull off the top, add the recommended liquid, and either blend, heat, or soak depending on the type you’ve chosen. And then, if you’re on the go (or just don’t care to dirty additional dishes), you can pour it back into the cup it came in to eat or drink it up.

Sweet Potato + Wild Rice Hash (Harvest Bowl)

It’s not only the simplicity and convenience that rocks — the ability to truly customize your order (and having so many options to choose from) is also pretty rad. Like, if you know you really only want smoothies, you can stick to just those, or if you want a variety, then get some of everything. You do you!

And if the idea of making all those choices is a little overwhelming, don’t sweat. You can also shop by their “Edits” or opt for a box of their best sellers. Since every recipe is designed by chefs and nutritionists, I mean, you can’t really go all that wrong.

To give you an idea of the variety I’m talking about, here are just a few of their best sellers:

  • Mint + Cacao Smoothie (one of my personal faves!)
  • Acai + Cherry Smoothie
  • Turmeric + Lemongrass Broth Soup
  • Cinnamon Protein + Banana Oat Bowl
  • Butternut Squash + Chimichurri Harvest Bowl

Every cup from Daily Harvest is plant-based and gluten-free. The flash-frozen ingredients are 98 percent organic and sourced from transitional organic farms that are in the process of getting their USDA certification. Daily Harvest says that this investment in transitional organic farms makes a big difference for the farmers who are going through the long and expensive process of getting that certification. You learn something new every day, huh?

Ginger + Greens (Smoothie)

So, obviously, I am digging what Daily Harvest offers — I can’t tell you how many often I did a fist pump when I was getting hungry for lunch and realized I had a smoothie or harvest bowl waiting for me in the freezer! But all that fresh, healthy, customized  convenience is not inexpensive, with the price ranging from $6.99 per cup (for the monthly shipment of  24, so a total of $167.76) up to $7.75 per cup (for the weekly shipment of 9 per week, giving you a weekly total of  $69.75).

But! There’s a lot less waste because all of the frozen ingredients are perfectly portioned out, so it saves you having to buy a bunch of fresh fruit that might go bad before you get around to using it all. Plus, Daily Harvest is offering our readers $25 off your first purchase !

Because I’m big on making sure I get plenty of protein, I also love that I can easily customize Daily Harvest to make it my own. I love to add protein powder to my smoothie and sometimes I add an egg, avocado or plain Greek yogurt to my Harvest Bowl — occasionally, a little hot sauce, too.

Signing up is easy, and Daily Harvest delivers to 95 percent of the continental United States. They also make it simple to skip or pause your delivery up until 6 pm ET the Sunday before your box is scheduled to ship if you’ve got some travel planned or just haven’t gotten through your previous delivery yet.

What’s more important to you: quality or convenience? Kind of awesome that you don’t have to sacrifice either here. –Kristen
